      Hello and welcome to the first in my series where I'll delve into some of my favorite royal icing techniques that I use at Sugarica Cookies to create designs and images on cookies that reflect my own personal creative style. 

      Let me just say that I encourage all of you to embrace your on creative style –– or brand, if you will. Don't water it down; give it emphasis and watch the beauty evolve into something that you can call a "signature" style! 

      That said, all art, no matter the medium or the canvas (cookies, in this case), incorporate technique to create illusions of depth, stylized modern art looks, texture, harmony, balance, or even photorealism! Moreover, how you start with the basic tenants of color theory and make those work for the visual, the subject matter and even the composition your intend... that's the key! Don't box yourself in with what others are doing. Take what you see and make it your own.

      Today's two techniques that I use often are:

      • Wet-on-wet dragging to create an enamel (baked and flatten) look

      • Multi-layer monochromatic base with splattered airbrushing and finishing with embellishment with a complimentary color (two colors opposite one another on the color wheel) 

      Take a look at the example of the yellow daisies and then look at the periwinkle petal flowers and let me know what you think of the results! 

      Try these two techniques that didn't originate for cookies decorating but from the art world! Yes, from artists, including painters, of all traditions and eras –– from Baroque, to Renaissance, to Impressionism and even to Modern Art in this century!
